In Daphne Simons’ video GULLED, the boundaries between biological and technological have collapsed as gross bodies make a desperate and distracted attempt to organise a heist.

Still from GULLED (2026), Daphne Simons
The object of this hectic heist? The aquatic hermaphrodites are known as sea-sheep of course. These tiny creatures are the rarefied power source in GULLED. Through their own klepto-plastic abilities, they have become symbolic of the parasitic relationship digital corporations have with their labour force and end users.
The various interfaces we see in GULLED began their life at the Caselberg House, where Daphne was the Caselberg x Blue Oyster summer resident in 2026. The video features a host of collaborators and the sound track comprises of comissioned music from Jared Pinfold (Tāmaki) and Finance (Ōtepoti).
What processes of rupture and repair will you find within GULLED? How will it change the way you relate to your body, interfaces and devices? Come and see this ecstatic romp through a seagull infested world for yourself!
Daphne will be giving a short artist talk at 11:30am on the opening day, Saturday 10th of October. Do not miss your chance to hear directly from the artist themselves!
Daphne Simons is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, whose work utilises moving image, sculpture, drawing, performance and comics. Unapologetically ridiculous and camp, their work draws from a referential whirlpool of gender performance, media and technology as they love to exaggerate these themes through a process of queer dis-identification. Some recent projects include; “SMASH” (2024) MEANWHILE (NZ); “Tamara and the Swan” (2023) San Mei Gallery (UK) and “Peach Teats at the Dude Ranch” (2023) Te Tuhi (NZ). They collaborate with Josie Perry (Plasma Spring) and Li-Ming Hu (RIFF RAFF) and have an MFA from the Piet Zwart Institute (NL).
