Led by contemporary Maori art curator Megan Tamati-Quennell (Ngai Tahu and Te Atiawa), Whakaanga me whakawhiti | Engagement and exchange is a workshop designed to bring artists, writers and creatives wanting to engage with Maori art, writing or curatorial practice together during the rising of Matariki/Puaka.

In a two-day format, the workshop will focus on modern and contemporary Maori art and will consider what modern and contemporary Maori is, who modern and contemporary art includes and how those fields are defined. It will also include a focus on the broader topic of Maori arts influence on New Zealand art, what that is, who that includes and how is that defined.

The workshop uses the notion of ‘looking back’ in order to move forward and will be an opportunity for dialogue, engagement and exchange. It is open emerging artists, writers and curators in Ōtepoti, Maori and non-Maori.
