In the East Side space, Wellington based artist Karin Van Roosmalen's Flexi is the third of four iterations of the project, which travels with a core set of components to each space. In previous site-specific works, Van Roosmalen has enjoyed referring to and exposing the ways buildings change; sometimes literally excising the present layers to reveal the past. For Flexi she will again be installing in response to the architectural aspects of the room as well as the contingencies of shifting between venues and responding to a variety of audiences.
Van Roosmalen is interested in the logistics of moving around and the tension between what is the minimal required to function effectively in the world and the compulsion to amass possessions. The temporary manner of construction and installation, and the range of media and their interaction with the site give a sense of assembling with disassembling in mind.
