*The Picnic*

The sprawling group exhibition curated by Caroline McCaw, titled *Picnic* took place in various cities across New Zealand, as well as online.

*The Picnic* was held in Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Christchurch and Wellington, this event encouraged people to gather in these locations for lunch or to sit at their computer and watch a live webcam performance from Amsterdam and experiment with the interactive MUSH (multi-user shared habitat), a kind of virtual environment. This exhibition through sharing and connectivity marked the rise of the internet era and highlighted our ever growing global community.

*The Picnic* was listed as an event in the inaugural Dunedin Fringe Festival in 2000:

"Performances, multimedia installations and a map directing picnickers through new media and art tours based on the idea of a picnic. Taking culture to the people, The Picnice takes place in Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton. The Dunedin Picnic culminates after four hours of entertainment to enjoy wine and cheese from Central Otago. Gather at the Blue Oyster Gallery at noon to pick up your map wich will guide you on your way. Blue Oyster Gallery and Art, Sat 14th, 12pm. Port Chalmers *Picnic* venue to be advised. Lounge Bar drinks vouchers available for forty lucky picnickers."
