Jim Allen’s News presents video and still documentation of three works by Mark Harvey responding to a performance by Jim Allen entitled News.

Originally presented in front of a live audience in 1976, News features Allen engaged in a repeated action, which over the course of 15 minutes gradually destroys a broadsheet newspaper.

Jim Allen’s News began as a project examining questions around documentation and performance, with News as a case study. Should performance be documented? How does documentation affect performance? The exhibition will be accompanied by a transcribed discussion between Mark Williams, Mark Harvey and Jim Allen.

Mark Harvey

Dr Mark Harvey is a performance artist and live artist working with choreography. Mark has presented performance work for the Blue Oyster and Dunedin Fringe Festival several time and is best known for his cardboard body suit and the journey he took down George Street on the ground using plungers to propel himself forward. His practices are conceptually driven and often dialogue and test out notions of minimal endurance with constructions of idiocy, seriousness and deadpan humour, drawing from his visual arts and contemporary dance influences. http://www.creative.auckland.ac.nz/people/m-harvey
