			<description>Dear Nigel
I understand that a decision has been made to stop or reduce reviews of art
exhibitions and I write to ask that if this is indeed the case that you may be prepared
to reconsider the matter. The arts community is becoming an ever increasingly more
important part of Dunedin life and needs to be nurtured at every opportunity.
One of the challenges is for information about exhibitions and critical comment about
those exhibitions being made available to the wider community. The role that your
newspaper has played in &quot;promoting the message&quot; has been invaluable and in my
view needs to be continued if Dunedin wishes to hold its position as the cultural
capital of New Zealand.
In these difficult times I do appreciate that hard decisions have to be made but the
effect of a decision such as the one that you may have made is to undermine, in a
huge way, those who mount exhibitions within our city.
I respectfully ask that you might revisit the decision.
Regards
Peter Chin

			<description>Dear Tom,

Thank you for your response. I still believe the reduction of dedicated space for reviewing is an indication that the ODT is not committed to, nor sees itself as a vital component of the discussion and engagement of art in Dunedin. As they currently stand the 'reviews' in art scene are not critical, providing simple observations without much, if any, analysis.

Reducing to fortnightly coverage may not in itself be a problematic decision, except that it is indicative of a move away from a commitment to having engaged arts commentary. Wellington critic Mark Amery only writes his column for the Dominion on a fortnightly basis. However, because of the calibre and critical engagement his column is reproduced on the government funded arts website The Big Idea and read nationally and internationally. I believe there would be more than enough material for an engaged critic(s) to work with in Dunedin, if flexibility was introduced into the format requested and critical engagement prioritised.

With the rise of online distribution and the circulation of information through email, blogs, and other online publications, there are many ways for institutions and artists to distribute information about events or to gain exposure. However, few of these venues lead to robust critical engagement and debate. It is this that is still in the hands of print journalism. Dunedin is deeply dependant on the ODT for this debate and it is crucial that this role is fostered. Every day I read the Guardian online, and their arts coverage is second to none. This is not because they are an online journal but because their writers are trained print journalists. If newspapers give up this role then there is no space left for skilled professional art criticism and journalism.

Profiling art works is important, what's on events are also important, but most important is a venue and vehicle for solid critical engagement with art. The ODT has a responsibility to its community to continue to resource engagement with contemporary art that is happening within our community. Rather than being diminished, the art review section should be growing in strength, critical engagement and mirror the contemporary art that is unique to Dunedin. If the ODT can see the arts not as a burden that it must give space to but more as an integral part of the community and something that grows community pride then the ODT can become become a part of our arts community and through critical engagement even a driving force.

			<description>Dear Ms Parkinson,
Thank you for your email concerning exhibition reviews. The editor passed it on to me. What we are doing is reducing the frequency of our &quot;Art seen&quot; review section from weekly to fortnightly. We are confident the existing three-review format will be able cover all significant exhibitions in our area on this basis. If on a rare occasion we need to accommodate further reviews outside this pattern, we will do so. But as you will appreciate, on a week where there are no new shows opening of any note, it makes little sense to mechanically dedicate space in our Arts section to reviews.
regards,
